Starting A Business From Home The Right
Way
In many ways, starting a business from home should be done the exact same way you would start a business from a
commercial property. After all, business is business and you need to put the same kind of focus and energy into an
online home business as you would if you were paying $6,000 a month for your business premises.
One of your first steps should be to make sure you have all proper documentation. Treat your "work at home"
business as seriously as you would if you were opening a store on Main Street. This means securing your business
name registration, any applicable tax licenses, and so on.
Some municipalities also require you to register your business from home as an official business. It's important
that your home business doesn't detract in any way from the residential neighbourhood. So turning your basement
workshop into a miniature production facility is not a good idea. Nor should you use your backyard as a storage lot
for a landscaping business. Eventually neighbours will complain and then you've got serious problem on your hands
when all you really want is a sucessful business from home.
To stay in the good graces of your neighbours and by-law officers, it's best to remain largely invisible with
your work at home business. By this I mean, no heavy or noisy equipment coming and going. When starting a business
from home, choose something you can do inside, from a converted spare bedroom. Think in terms of marketing,
writing, graphic design, or consulting. Anything you can do with a simple computer, desk and internet connection is
the best way to go.
If you've never worked from home before, it may take some getting used to. The first thing you need to do is
separate your work from leisure and the easiest way to do this is to limit your work to the office and once you set
foot in that room - it's all business. But when the day is done, shut off the light and leave your work inside.
It's important to set up this boundary or you're likely to be repeatedly interrupted. When family members know come
to know that you're serious about starting a business from home and that entering your workspace means game on.
Another vital element of a successful business at home is a business plan. Think out your entire business model
in advance and get it down on paper. What you want to have clearly laid out in front of you is an overview of your
operation. Sure, they'll be twists and turns along the way as you progress, but having an idea and clearly defined
goal in advance is the key to the steady progression towards it.
