Set A Realistic Target For
Your New Business and Meet It
It's vital that you as an entrepreneur set a goal for your new business. A small busiess start up needs an
injection of energy and enthusiasm and it's up to you to provide it.
Shoot for something that excites you, but at the same time seems realistic. There's no question in my mind that
you are capable of great achievements in the business world. So go ahead and shoot for the moon if you feel that
it's clearly attainable with your plan.
But here's the problem many new businesses face: they don't believe on a deeper level that they can actually
pull it off.
If you set a goal that seems outside your realm of accomplishment, your subconscious mind won't buy into your
plan and when that's the case, you're doomed from the beginning. Your new business won't stand much of a
chance.
You want a goal that both thrills you and feels within reach. It's fine, in fact you should stretch and reach
for new levels of accomplishment. But you've got to know 'heart and soul' that you can attain those lofty goals as
an entrepreneur. You are soley responsible for your results, so choose your targets accordingly.
With your small business start up, set a goal and assign a time limit for its attainment. For a new business, I
suggest 90 days. That's how long it takes to really get things going after ironing out the inevitable start-up
wrinkles.
For example, your target might be to generate an additional $90,000 in the next 90 days. If you think you can do
it in a month or two, that's terrific. But allowing 3 months to make it happen provides a cushion for dealing with
those problems and obstacles tha tend to creep up along the way.
It's particularly challenging for the new business because in many cases, you're carving your own original path
without a map or directions to follow.
If you set a 30-day goal there's more pressure on you during each of those days. When you're new in business,
there are plenty of distractions and details you'll have to contend with. So a 90-day benchmark provides a more
realistic timeframe for the busy entrepeneur.
Once you've set your target, get to work on it immediately. Consider it a challenge and an opportunity to
generate maximum sales at the lowest possible cost in minimum time.
Consider each new business idea, promotion, campaign, product, or venture could be the express route to your
goal. Then put every ounce of energy into the action steps that are necessary to make it happen.
