3 High-Value Sources To Help You Get Started In Business

Owning a small business is the dream of many people all over the world and it makes perfect sense. As a small business owner, you're independent. You call the shots. You are your own boss. And the sky's the only limit to your earning potential. Someone once said that the dream of owning an online business today is a lot like the dream of owning a home with a white picket fence of yesteryear.

Whether you're start-up is home-based, or you've chosen a more traditional business to launch, you can succeed, despite what the statistics might indicate.

Anyone can start a business. But having the desire to succeed as an entrepreneur and actually doing it are two different things. The secret lies in knowledge. But nobody knows it all. So it's not unusual to find budding business owners scurrying about seeking the information they need.

Starting A Business Help Is Often Closer Than You Think

Find help starting a business and your odds of success go way up. In most cases, you don't have to look very far.

Consider the type of business and the industry. It should be something you know and understand quite well and it should be something you're passionate about. Now, think of the most successful entrepreneurs or business owners in the general category. Make a list of the highly-effective people you know through your current or past experience in this field. Who could provide the inside information you lack? Who could offer help 'starting a business' advice? Is there someone, somewhere who could potentially assist you in filling in the blanks and give you some keen insights that could make all the difference?

Obviously know one is going to give away what they consider "secret" information to a potential competitor. But if you can demonstrate that you're not a direct competitor (same industry but different product line, for example) and you already know these people on some level (building relationships is the key), chances are they'll want to help you and will dish out some 'how to start a business' advice that you just can't get anywhere else because it comes from years of real world, in-the-trenches experience.

Years ago, after launching a small woodworking business and struggling, a neighbouring contracting business owner happened to mention that all his business came from large general contractors and tenders. That one shift in direction opened up new options in commercial work, something we hadn't directly gone after before. This one twist dramatically improved business and let to larger, more lucrative deals and plenty of repeat business. But had I never had that chance conversation with my neighbour, I might never have tapped into the profits that carried me for the next several years.

Libraries and Chambers Of Commerce

Numerous sources abound offering help starting a business. One of your first stops should be your local library. Talk to the chief librarian and ask for information and resources on starting a business. Many of these professionals are eager experts in information retrieval and are only too willing to help anyone with a sincere interest and polite approach.

Governments on all levels have recognized the value of small businesses and provide plenty of support. Check also with your local Chamber of Commerce. I was amazed at the library of multimedia materials available free for the asking. All I needed to do was provide my basic business registration and I walked out with several helpful books, reports and articles.

Government Websites Offering Free Help Starting A Business

Don't overlook the web as a helpful source for finding starting a business advice. Try your local city, state or province. Then source information from your federal government. The US Government provides a great resource at: http://business.gov. Another valuable resource is the Small Business Administration site at: http://www.sba.gov. Finally, you can search the web for forums and discussions on starting a business in your niche market. Information is the key to your success and finding the specific information you're seeking can take time. But owning a thriving business makes all your efforts worthwhile.
